The new SUV is presented in the form of an all-wheel drive rechargeable hybrid. At the moment, the model is only available in the brand’s homeland.

It happened: The Century name is now not only Toyota’s executive sedan, but also a large and, of course, luxury crossover. Moreover, the four-door is not going to retire, as representatives of the company announced during the SUV presentation held today. It is curious that the cross is called “just” Century, whereas the second model is now Century Sedan. Well, recall that the four–door Toyota has been in service since 1967, and its current generation is only the third: such a Century sedan debuted in 2018, it is built on a rear-wheel drive platform and has a hybrid installation based on the V8 5.0 engine. However, the Century SUV is designed quite differently.

The crossover is built on the TNGA-K “trolley”, on which, for example, Toyota Grand Highlander and Lexus TX are also based. The new flagship has a spring suspension with McPherson struts at the front and a multi-link at the rear, while the chassis additionally has a rear wheel thruster.

Toyota Century SUV is also a hybrid, but V8 is not allowed for it. But the cross can be charged from an outlet: the PHEV installation includes a gasoline atmospheric 2GR-FXS V6 3.5 (installed transversely) and an electromechanical variator, a separate electric motor is located on the rear axle (all-wheel drive is called E-Four). The total return of the cross is 412 hp. Only on electric traction a car weighing 2570 kg is able to travel 69 kilometers. There are driving modes Eco, Normal, Sport, Custom and – new – Rear Comfort. The latter involves smoothing accelerations and decelerations in order to ensure maximum comfort for VIP passengers.

The length of the Toyota Century is 5205 mm, width – 1990 mm, height – 1805 mm, wheelbase – 2950 mm. The passport ground clearance is 185 mm. The trunk volume is 340 liters. Exterior features – split headlights and lanterns (hello, Genesis!), rectangular radiator grille and massive bumpers. The models have 20- or 22-inch wheels. The rear doors swing open at 75 degrees, there are retractable footrests.

By the way, the premiere also showed a car with a sliding tailgate, like a minivan. However, such an option does not appear in the price list yet. And there is also a convertible in the plans! The crossover without a roof was highlighted on the presentation slide, although Toyota itself did not mention such a version in the release. It is possible that the convertible will be made only if there is a corresponding order.

The Century SUV is offered exclusively with a four-seat cabin, in which the main attention, of course, was paid to the second row. The rear seats are separated by a massive tunnel, on which there are two separate consoles for controlling the main functions. There is a small refrigerator between the reclining backs. The seats themselves are electrically powered, heated and ventilated, plus there are folding footrests. The seat located behind the front passenger can also be moved forward. There is a glass section above the heads of the rear riders. Separate displays of the entertainment system are also provided.

The front part was decorated in the strict style of the Century sedan, there is a virtual dashboard, a multimedia system screen built into the panel and a climate control unit with touch buttons. The list of equipment also includes a set of Toyota Safety Sense safety systems (adaptive cruise control, auto-braking systems, lane keeping, etc.).

The luxury crossover has so far been announced only for its native Japan, where orders are already open. The initial sales plan is only 30 copies per month. The price of the only complete set at the moment is 25 million yen, which is equivalent to about 170,000 dollars. For comparison, the coolest SUV Toyota Land Cruiser 300 (GR Sport version) in the homeland of the brand costs 8 million yen ($ 54,000), and the top Lexus LX there will cost 18 million yen ($ 122,000). The price of a Toyota Century sedan starts from 20,080,000 yen ($136,000).
